Am I My Brother's Keeper
March 29, 2003
Pastor Bob Roberts

I. WORDS OF CAIN Genesis 4:9
A question that comes to every Christian.

 A. Relation of love. John 13:34,35 God could not sit by and watch the human condition without doing something.
 B. Not looking only to oneself Philippians 2:3,4 I once ask my students whether they saw themselves as better, worse, or the same as others. The Bible answers this in the text we just read. Let each esteem others better than themselves.

II. REASONS TO SEEK OUT OUR BROTHER

 A. If he sins against you. Matthew 18:15-18 It doesn't say to publish what a brother has done. It doesn't say to tell his brother, sister, or mother. It says to tell him.
 B. If someone has something against you. Matthew 5:23,24
 C. If you see your brother sin. 1 John 5:16 Intervene on his behalf.
 D. If someone is taken in a fault. Galatians 6:1 Restore such a person lest you also be tempted.

III WE ARE NOT TO CONDEMN

 A. Jesus and the woman taken into adultery. John 8:7 I was sent a letter from another church in Guatemala about a member of that church who had fallen into a sin and had now moved to where I was the pastor. I went to this man and told him that I was aware of his past but not accusing him. I asked him to put that behind him. The Holy Spirit moved upon him and he repented of his sin and was restored to the church.
 B. You are not excusable. Romans 2:1 When you judge, you condemn yourself.
 C. We must bear other's burdens. Galatians 6:2
 D. We are to restore such a one. Galatians 6:1 Do not be ready to accuse.

IV. IF HE CONTINUES...

 A. Don't eat with such. 1 Corinthians 5:11 Council in one places not contemn, but in Corinthians it says to not eat with him.
 B. If he is a heretic. Titus 3:10
 C. His name will be blotted out. Revelation 3:5
 D. Heaven notices. Matthew 18:18 God has given authority to the church to separate the person from the church.
 E. Don't receive him into your house. 2 John 10 We are not only to regard the person as a heretic, we are not to invite him into our house. If you know someone is not in fellowship and they come to your house teaching lies we are not to invite them in.

Ephesians 5:20 This is the call God makes to us.
