The Works of Him That Sent Me
October 19, 2002
Pastor Bob Roberts

Key Text: John 1:9

I. I Must Work The Works Of Him That Sent Me John 1:9
Why We Ask? Why was Jesus so intent on doing the works of His Father?

 A. He had come with that purpose.
  1. He came to do the will of His Father. John 6:38. That was his purpose for coming here.
  2. He delighted in doing it. Psalms 40:8.
 B. He came to reveal the mystery. Colossians 1:27. What is a mystery? Something you cannot explain. Christ came as a human being, but he never sinned. How can that be? It is a mystery; perhaps more than the mystery of iniquity - The mystery of righteousness. The mystery will be revealed not only in Christ, but also in you. In Christ is the hope of glory.

  2. Through preaching. Romans 16:25.
 C. Our only hope - in his name. Acts 4:12,10.
  1. Israel's mistakes. Jeremiah 2:13. Not only was Christ rejected when he came, but they attempted to find salvation in themselves, in their own works.
  2. We are prone to make the same mistake.

II. We Ask "When?" John 9:4.
We are living on borrowed time. We don't know when Christ may return, but we know it is near because of the events of Matthew 24.

 A. While it is day (referring primarily to the time he was on earth.)
  1. Time of grace.
  2. Opportunities come and go.
   a. Liberty - We were holding evangelistic meetings in Leon, Nicaragua. Seventy converts were organized into a new church. People were so joyful that they had found the gospel. It was only a few months after that when war broke out in Nicaragua and it was almost impossible to spread the word. So it is now, that we should work while we have the opportunity.
   b. While the Spirit lingers.
    (1) Amos 8:11,12. I will send a famine
    (2) Proverbs 1:24-30. He says this after he has given everyone every opportunity to be saved. So many people put off their decision for Christ. We were having meetings in Puerto Rico and I met with a man who had heard the message. He understood it and said he would make that decision one day. I went to Haiti for a week. Upon my return, someone spoke to me and said that a Bible worker was studying with him and the man had a MI (heart attack) and died on the spot. He put off his decision too long.
  3. The night cometh. John 9:4.
   a. When no man can work.
   b. As long as I am in the world, I am the light. John 9:5; John 8:12.
   c. Ye are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14.
    (1) Great responsibility to speak to mother, father, brother, sister now - before the night comes.
    (2) He will help us. Hebrews 13:6. God is our helper.

III. We Were Re-Created With That Purpose Ephesians 2:10.

 A. We are His witnesses Isaiah 43:10.

 B. We must start at home. Acts 1:8. Start where we are, at the person beside us, to share the good news.

 C. Jesus witnessed to the blind man after he healed him. John 9:35. Do you believe on the Son of Man?
  1. He responded positively. John 9:36.
  2. Jesus identified Himself. John 9:37.
  3. He said, "Lord, I believe..." John 9:38.
  4. And he worshiped Him. John 9:38.

Jesus longs to heal physically and spiritually. The Bible says today is the day. We have the opportunity today.
