Watching Our Words
October 12, 2002
Pastor Bob Roberts
| Key Text: Psalms 141:3
I. Our Text This Morning Is A Prayer
Why would David pray a prayer like this? Couldn't he take care of the problem himself?
A. Sometimes the Bible exhorts - commands.
B. This is a prayer born of necessity.
II. Why Such A Prayer?
A. The tongue is capable of unbelievable things. James 3:5,6
I can't help but think of Waco when I think of fire. As the fire grew, it was obvious that everyone would be consumed by it.
1. I once was greeting people at the church. An old man came in with a young woman. I introduced myself and then asked if this was his daughter. That was a Faux Pas. It was his wife, and he glared at me.

B. We are unable to control it. James 3:8. No one can tame it. We may think we have it under control when we are sitting quietly, but we don't.
1. Lions have been tamed. Little Tyke - a cub that was raised around people was tame. James 3:7.
2. Even serpents.
3. But the tongue? No, according to the Bible writer.
III. Who Should Be The Watchman? The Lord Himself Psalms 141:3
A. He learned obedience by suffering. Hebrews 5:8 A woman in the Colubia mission office heard other people in the office talking about La Pustala. She knew they were talking about her because of the customs that were different there and she was deeply hurt.
B. He reviled not again. 1 Peter 2:21-23. I remember when I was young I would have fights with my sister. She was older and bigger and if she trapped me in a corner I could not get out. I felt it was my duty to tell her I could really hurt her.
1. He didn't even accuse Satan. Jude 1:9. Did not retaliate against Satan.
2. We despise any kind of dominion. Boss, traffic officer, leaders of government. 2 Peter 2:10,11. Don't tell me what to do! Have you said that? Peter calls them presumptuous, self-willed.
IV. How Can This Watch Be Established?
A. Through prayer. Psalms 141:3.
B. Through death to self. Galations 2:20. If we try to demand our rights we do not die to self.
C. Through abiding in Him. John 15:4. How many times have we said we will never say a word against a friend or relative only to find ourselves speaking unkind words. We condemn ourselves; we feel guilty. We may not have prayed that day for God to protect our lips.
