Fruits Of The Spirit II
July 20, 2002
Pastor Bob Roberts

Galations 5:22-23 Every tree is known by its fruit. So it is in the spritual world.

I. Gentleness
Not pushy - wants to help - suave.

 A. Indicates a tender character.
 B. Reverse of malignant (cancer), destructive, devastating. In contrast God brings health and strength.
 C. Does good to others. A blessing to self and others. II. Goodness
Emphasis on kindness rather than justice. Someone has said I hope God doesn't treat me with justice in the final day.

 A. Jesus with adulterous woman. John 8:1-11 Goodness that forgives.

 B. Jesus with Peter. Matthew 26:33-35

Faith (fidelity)
The story of two brothers and father's vineyard. One said he would work, but didn't. One said he would not work, but did.

 A. This is the victory. 1 John 5:4,5; 1 John 5:4,5. Overcomers. Victory is given to us.
 B. A measure given to each one. Romans 12:3.
 C. I can do all things... Philippians 4:13. This portion is a contrast to "miserable man that I am."

IV. Meekness
In the film "The Horse Whisper", Monty Roberts developed a new way to train horses. Instead of breaking a horse, softly and carefully he whispers to him gaining confidence until he can place a saddle on him and ride him. So it is with the Holy Spirit.

 A. Moses - the meekest man on all the earth. Numbers 12:3.
  1. Not meek at first - killed the Egyptian.
  2. He developed it - 40 years in palace; 40 years in desert at Midian unlearning what he learned in the palace; 40 years in wanderings.

V. Temperance (self-control)
Means renouncing that which is harmful.

 A. Abandon that which is harmful, and
 B. Use in moderation that which is good.
 C. Daniel purposed to not contaminate himself. Daniel 1:8.
 D. Ellen White - cigarettes - tobacco was used as a remedy. She wrote that it contains poisons and should be avoided.
 E. Diet, pure air, pure water, exercise, rest, sunlight, trust in God.
Many opinions going around - drinking is not harmful, now fat is OK. So we must choose to follow what is true or what is the world's trend. We are still facing things which we come to know what is good. Everyone has this situation in whatever place they are in their Christian development.

VI. Those Led By The Spirit

 A. Romans 8:14. If you are led by the Spirit of God, you are the Sons of God.
 B. The Spirit bears witness. Romans 8:16.
 C. If children, the heirs. Romans 8:17. This "right" is received by faith.
